For 52 years, the Detroit Red Wings’ home arena was Olympia Stadium, or The Old Red Barn as fans called it. Olympia was the site of many great games, including two Stanley Cup Game 7 overtime wins – in 1950 against the New York Rangers and in 1954 against the Montreal Canadiens. While Red Wings fan bid adieu to Olympia Stadium in 1979, they took with them a pastime to the team's new home. To this day, it is still common to see a fan throw an octopus on the ice. It started during 1952 playoffs when a local fish store owner threw the first octopus on the rink. The eight octopus arms signified the eight wins needed to win the 1952 Cup.
