Michigan Stadium opened in 1927 and was formally dedicated during the Wolverines game against rival Ohio State. The Wolverines won the game in front of a then-record crowd of 84,401 fans. In 1949 the NCAA began keeping attendance records, and Michigan led the NCAA with an average of 93,384 fans. In 1956, against Michigan State, the Wolverines hosted more than 100,000 fans for the first time. With seating capacity at 107,601, the stadium is college football's largest and is often simply called 'The Big House.'
