Big Games: Our Favorite College Football Rivalries

Ask sports fans what their favorite season of the year is, and you’ll likely hear many fans say college football season. From a late summer kickoff through the heart of autumn to wintertime bowl games, college football has been one of the most exciting sports to follow.

At Winning Streak we’re inspired by the loyalty of college sports fans, and we love putting quality products together that capture the essence of that dedication. From Alabama’s crimson to Michigan’s maize to that Texas orange, we’ve got the colors of all the big colleges that make for great home and office décor.

But come the weekend, we’re big college football fans just like our customers. It’s hard to pick our favorite games to watch, but here are a few that we tune into.

Auburn-Alabama: The rivalry that gave us the Kick Six - who could forget that ending? It was a miracle in Jordan-Hare ( listen to Auburn's radio call). That 2013 game's excitement perfectly captures the stakes of the annual Iron Bowl between the cross-state rivals. Traditionally played on Thanksgiving weekend, this game pits two of the winningest programs in college football history against each other in a contest that usually has national championship implications.

Ohio State-Michigan: This matchup is simply called "The Game," and for good reason. This 120-year-old rivalry often carries implications for each team’s conference title and national championship hopes. Remember that 2006 game? Both teams 11-0, ranked #1 and #2, held the attention of nearly 22 million TV viewers as Ohio State edged Michigan 42-39. It meant a Big Ten title and a trip to the BCS Championship for the Buckeyes.

Texas-Oklahoma: The Red River Showdown, a battle between neighboring states that goes back to 1900, continues to be one of the best games of the season. One of our favorite games was the 2018 regular-season matchup. Down 45-24 heading into the fourth, eventual Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray rallied the Sooners with three unanswered scores for a tie late in the game. Then Texas would boot a game-winning field goal with seconds left.

Florida State-Miami: For a rivalry steeped with superstars like Florida State's Deion Sanders and Warrick Dunn, as well as Miami's Michael Irvin and Ed Reed, it's remarkable that the play call most fans remember is: "Wide right!" Four times ('91, '92, '00 and '04) the Florida State kicker pushed it wide when they were behind late in the game. And let's not forget those two times ('00 and '18) that a late for-the-win Seminoles kick missed to the left of the uprights.

Notre Dame-USC: With 22 national championships and 14 Heismans between them, this rivalry is a must-see. They have met over 90 times, with both teams often high in the rankings. Remember 1988? The late-season matchup pitted #1 Notre Dame versus #2 USC in a game that would set up the national championship. In the end, the legendary Lou Holtz led his Fighting Irish past the Trojans, and then beat #3 West Virginia for the title.

Florida-Georgia: We love a party crowd. Florida-Georgia, played by the state border in Jacksonville, is unofficially known as The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. This rivalry is heated, bitter and fun. Our memory goes back a bit, to Herschel Walker. Walker going "over the top" in the '81 and '82 games is etched in our minds. The guy just dazzled, rushing for 649 yards and eight touchdowns in three games.

About that wall décor… we’ve got all these teams in our vast collection of banners and pennants. They’re perfect for your wall at home or at the office. And if not for you, our sports memorabilia is a great gift for that diehard sports fan you know.
